Ok. Lock, singular. But still. Before proceeding with ordering the stuff needed to install the diff lock linkage on the Landy, I wanted to confirm I actually had the hardware. This proved oddly difficult.

I’ve tried multiple times to find the serial number of my transfer case, but never had any luck. Finally today I got angry and asked my friend (who operates a local Swedish shop near work) if I could borrow a lift. He agreed, and I headed over during lunch.

After getting under the car and completely inspecting the transfer case I figured out why I couldn’t locate the serial number.

No really, get out of the comments. I know where it should be on both models of transfer case and it isn’t in either of those places. There isn’t one. See:

Insert serial number here?

My best guess is it is some sort of aftermarket and/or rebuilt case? I have no idea.

Anyway, undeterred I looked up diagrams of the case and managed to find the right place to wedge my phone to see this little baby.

That little thing right there. That is what all the fuss is about.

Yup. Thar be a diff lock nipple thingy.

Just to make sure, I grabbed a 10mm wrench, threw it on there and twisted. After a short travel I heard and felt a very satisfying click. Top-side, we started the car are were rewarded with...

Kinja'd!!!

So, long story short (too late), I have diff locks and they work. Time to buy the linkage!

Out of stock.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

[UPDATE] Found a 2004 D2 linkage on eBay for a reasonable price, so I am going that route. We’re back on!

Center lock, right? Not a front and rear? It’s quite well documented that LR was so confident in its traction control system that they omitted the actuator on the center lock. I’ve chatted with a few LR guys who have lots of good stories about crawling under their Disco2's in the mud and rocks to engage the center locker.

Yeah, center lock. Correct.

Having scrambled up rocks without it, I would very much like to have it.

Also having experienced the infamous “three amigos” I would like to have it in case the traction control goes out.

I’m more inclined to believe in really, really poor QC.

Yes, it’s a big help! I’m not entirely familiar with the D2's transfer case. Is it possible to add the electronic actuator?

That’d be neat! I’ve heard of a kit that uses a window regulator to do it, but I was unable to find a place to purchase.

I don’t mind the mechanical linkage but the kits are expensive and out of stock from the supplier. US suppliers appear to be putting a $150-$200 markup on them because... reasons.

I have fond memories of friends crawling underneath their Disco to lock it up. As they do that the Toyota guys are rolling back and forth and back and forth to wait for their front and rear diff locks to engage. Each truck has it’s offroad dance!

Hm, I recall seeing a few kits for replacing electronic Toyota actuators with pneumatic cylinders. This could probably work if the lock on your case doesn’t need to be rotated more than 90 or so degrees. Wouldn’t be bad if you ever plan on adding ARB air lockers to the front and rear. Man, a maintained triple locked Disco2 would be absolutely killer on the trails.

Don’t forget the hissing ARB’s and the lunchboxes clicking along a tight turn.
